How would I go about painting a dark colored room a cream color?

I don't want to spend a ton of money on it either. How would I go about painting a dark colored room a cream color?
One coat primer/paints are a waste of money. First paint the walls with a quality primer, such as Benjamin Moore Fresh Start or Zinsser 1-2-3. Next, use a good quality finish paint. With the primer it should cover in one coat, but for best results apply 2 coats. Hope this helps. How would I go about painting a dark colored room a cream color?
I have to agree with woodtick314, one coat paints are not as good as the manufacturers claim. (Just my opinion, of course!)

The use of the word primer is over-used.

If your walls are already painted with whatever colour, there's no need for a primer, they're already primed.

To start, you should whiten your walls, any store's own brand should do adequately.

The first light coloured coat should be slightly thinner than the second just make sure the second white coat gives a solid finish on which to apply the cream colour.

Don't thin the cream coat and you should find it will cover in one coat without having to be too thick.

If the paint is applied too thickly, you'll get visible brush marks that will just detract from the finished result.
a paint store will direct you to a primer that is applied first or some new paints that are manufactured to hid in one coat, ask the paint store for help they will be glad to help or go to a home center eg. lowes/home depot
